Here’s Why Our Generation Is Suffering From ‘Gamophobia’ – The Fear Of Getting Married

Welcome to the generation where “make up and break up” go hand in hand and marriages are nothing but the most unwanted call to youngsters. Coming from a civilization of arrange marriages, our generation is getting scared of the entire idea of marriage. From finding the perfect match to increasing number of divorces, marriages have affected the modern mindset.

This generation is undergoing a commitment phobia and marriages are simply not a priority anymore. So here are the 10 reasons why we’re scared of marriage:

1. We are much more career oriented than our previous generations

Today, everybody is so consumed by the rat race that they don’t give marriages a priority in their life. Marriage demands attention and the thought of lagging behind in that cutthroat competition really affects us. This generation knows better where to channelize their energies.

2. We are in the quest of finding “Ourselves”

Everybody wants to find “self” and understand the true purpose of their life. We are happier investing time in ourselves rather than building long-lasting ties with somebody else. Nobody wants to sacrifice and be in a wrong story.

3. Commitment has become a ‘nightmare’ for us

Marriages mean being together for life. There are so many insecurities in life that commitment has lately become a scary picture for us.

4. The concept of “Ideal Bahu” and “Pati Parmeshwar” is no more relatable

Women these days don’t find gratification in being the perfect homemaker and men don’t want to be the supreme lord for their wife. This generation does not believe in perfectionism and idealism. Everybody wants to be financially independent and the pursuit of ambitions has become the priority.

5. Divorce rates are increasing and there is nothing called happily ever after

Our generation is more realistic and logical. We have already witnessed that divorce rates are growing and people are walking out of their partners. If parting ways is the only escape, then why go through the ordeal of getting married in the first place?

6. It’s difficult to deal with orthodox in-laws and their rules

Our mothers keep telling us how post marriage everyone has to adjust to fit in the new house and new relationships. Our mothers and their mothers adjusted but our generation finds difficult to adjust because of our lifestyle. The unrealistic expectations from in-laws also freaks out youngsters these days.

7. Marriage kills freedom

No one wants to lose their freedom. Isn’t it too difficult to be answerable for every action of yours? Post marriage things change and you can be just on your own. Your each and every activity starts bothering either your partner, or their family, and hence you lose your freedom.


8. Personal space? What personal space?

We are not ready to compromise and we respect equality. But post marriage, things get difficult when you want to be by yourself but have somebody always there. We are way too obsessed with our personal space and respects. (3)Source

9. We take time on figuring out things and marriage is the last option.

Our generation is undergoing a situation of mid-life crisis and confusion. The world around us has become so capricious that we are not sure about our life. And marriage is the last thing on our mind. (1)Source

10. We don’t want marriage to play the part of companionship

Our generation is surrounded by family, friends, love and even pets. We don’t want to pay attention to marriage just for companionship.


The whole idea is not to declare marriage as an unnecessary part of life but to understand that the present generation is getting scared rather than dreaming about the perfect marriage. Traditions and understanding need to be changed to overcome this.

We can always get married when the time is “right”. Let’s not make it a peer pressure.
