Dera Chief Ram Rahim Sentenced For 20 Years For Rape, High Security Across Punjab And Haryana

A special CBI court on Monday sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 20 years in jail in a rape case in Rohtak as he was announced guilty of raping two women in a 2002 case. Rohtak has been turned into a fortress by paramilitary forces and the Haryana Police. Followers of Dera Sacha Sauda in Punjab, Haryana, and other cities, burnt down gas stations and train stations and torched vehicles after Dera chief Ram Rahim was announced guilty of rape by the special CBI court in Panchkula on Friday.

Navdeep Singh Virk, IGP Rohtak Range was quoted as saying that no Dera follower has been allowed to enter Rohtak district or around the jail. Around 38 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the violence in Haryana, informed officials. Sufficient security arrangements have been made for people in Haryana to ensure peace and harmony.  Barbed wire barriers are in place and residents have been asked to stay indoors in Rohtak.

Home Secretary Ram Nivas told News18, “Thirty fresh companies of central paramilitary forces have been pressed into service in Rohtak ahead of the verdict”. Schools and offices remain closed and Army conducted a flag march in Sirsa after Ram Rahim Singh got 10 years in prison for sexual exploitation.
